The creation of the port of Sète in 1666 and the construction of the Canal du Midi, inaugurated in 1681, boosted the wine trade. The role of the ports of Sète and Marseillan as wineries was strengthened by the completion of the Canal du Midi.
In the second half of the 19th century, cooperage was the mainstay of the ports of Mèze and Marseillan.
