the territory of 58 grape varieties
Totally in tune with the times, Pays d’Oc PGI wines have been working for almost forty years in the heart of France’s oldest vineyard, founded in the VIᵉ century BC. Born in 1987 around the concept of varietal wines, Pays d’Oc PGI proudly displays, in France and internationally, the colors of a sunny south, with wines that are now recognized.
The character of Pays d’Oc PGI varietal wines is closely linked to the region’s sunnyMediterranean climate. Similar to an amphitheater opening onto the Mediterranean Sea, its geographical area extends in an arc along the 200 kilometers of coastline formed by the Gulf of Lion, from Nîmes, via the Camargue and the Côte Vermeille, to the Spanish border.
To the north, the Pyrenees mountain ranges, and to the east, the foothills of the Cévennes, define this vast wine-growing area.
Spread over 110,000 hectares, the vineyards are structured around three main areas of influence:
– the coastal plains,
– the first hillsides,
– high altitude vineyards .
This mosaic of territories constitutes a unique terrain of expression for the 58 grape varieties authorized by the “Des femmes et des hommes engagés” label.
The Pays d’Oc PGI vineyards include 760 individual wineries and 140 cooperative wineries, bringing together almost 12,000 winegrowers and 350 marketers. Heirs to more than 26 centuries of winegrowing history, these players perpetuate a heritage shaped by winegrowing follies, the Canal du Midi and the Via Domitia.
Aware of the need to preserve their territory, they are now committed to sustainable development and social responsibility, through the Pays d’Oc Vineyard In Progress® program.
